Bringing the world of our making into congruence with the world of intent… pursuing life of the whole approaches that work for all children in the world… being accountable for structures that we bring into existence – into the world… creating a better living world for our children… all call upon will.
Will, as we understand, is quite different from motivation. Will is drawn into us and through us; motivation is something we can self-generate or perhaps have externally imposed on us. Motivation is most often about goals, and goals relate to existence. Goals allow a narrow focus, narrow in that they allow us to ignore – be blind to – much of that which surrounds the goal. Will, on the other hand, opens us up to the whole and the intended working of the whole. It is not uncommon to see motivation and goal-focus obscure important, significant realities… obscure such that there is a void, a lack of concern, in regards to any real value being present to humanity, or attention to serious consequences to life.
For example, the motivation of science/scientist is discovery; the essence of science is understanding structure, structuring at interfaces. In the presence of will, the focus shifts to understanding intended ways of working (versus imposing our desires upon it) and in the process, lifting up for all a real sense of awe and beauty in regard to what is before us… and it maintains a conscious eye towards what we have the capacity to manage. Thus avoiding the “outrunning of our headlights” that is so common today.
Thus we see that those whose aim is related to right and good, ethical ways – keeping in mind the children and the life of the whole – look to will, the will of intent, intended ways of working. Motivational energies can then be shaped and led towards intentional outcomes. Questions and questioning imagery seem to be useful to awaken will, such that we are not being driven by blind motivation. Perhaps some starting point for generating these would be questions such as:
What is the destiny of this path, the obvious end point?
Where is the better life for all children?
What is the value of this to people, to all people, to life, to all life?
